The Russian school of engineering ranks among the best in the world and Moscow State Institute of Steel and Alloys (Technological University) - MISA is a worldwide leading University in Materials Science, Surface Engineering and Metallurgy with 75 years old traditions in basic and technological research and developments. Nowadays the University has scientific and technological relations with research centers and industrial companies of 30 countries all over the world. MISA manages large national and regional programs “New materials” and “Nanomaterials”. Scientific-Educational Center of Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS Centre) of MISA (www.shs.misis.ru) has been established in 1989 in order to launch scientific integration between MISA and Institute of Structural Macrokinetics and Materials Science of Russian Academy of Science in the field of SHS method. Nowadays the SHS Centre of MISA is a multidisciplinary research centre with a wide area of scientific activity: Nanostructured Materials; Biomaterials; Multifunctional Bioactive Films; Hard, Wear- and Corrosion Resistant Coatings; Self-Lubricating Coatings, Nanodispersion Strengthened Coatings; Ceramics; Intermetallides; Composite and Functionally-Graded Materials. The expertise and research leadership of MISA team is evidenced by above 300 publications on metal, metal-ceramic and functionally graded materials, nano-structured thin films and multi-functional biocompatible coatings, their development, characterization, testing and application in national and international journals. The MISA team has numerous IPR documents: Russian and International patents; Technical Specifications, Technological Instructions and Registered Know-How for materials and technologies. SHS Center of MISA participated in numerous international projects in the field of nanostructured materials, biomaterials and coatings such as ISTC, CRDF, EUREKA, FP6, INTAS, UK Royal Society, etc. MISA has close relations with industry.
